MY VIOLIN STUDIO MISSION STATEMENT

My mission statement for my violin music studio is along the lines of the R.I.C. music department mission statement.

I have also found on the internet the self-assessment tool for the independent music teacher.

As a violin teacher, I play a crucial role in guiding my students' musical development. Helping them evaluate themselves is an important aspect of their growth as musicians. Several strategies I employ to facilitate self-evaluation in my violin students:

1. Goal Setting: Encourage your students to set personal goals for their violin playing. Work together to establish short-term and long-term objectives that align with their interests and aspirations. By having clear goals, students can track their progress and assess their own development.

2. Self-Reflection: Teach your students the importance of self-reflection after each practice session or performance. Encourage them to ask themselves questions like: What went well? What areas need improvement? What specific challenges did they encounter? This self-reflective process helps students become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to take ownership of their learning.

3. Recording and Listening: Encourage your students to record their practice sessions or performances. By listening to their own playing, they can objectively assess their tone, intonation, rhythm, and overall musicality. This process allows them to identify areas that require improvement and develop a critical ear.

4. Peer Feedback: Facilitate opportunities for peer feedback among your students. Pair them up or create small group activities where they can perform for one another and provide constructive feedback. This not only fosters a supportive learning environment but also teaches students to actively listen to their peers and evaluate performances objectively. Peer feedback encourages students to articulate their observations and offer suggestions for improvement.

5. Rubrics and Self-Assessment Tools: Develop rubrics or self-assessment tools that outline specific criteria for evaluating violin playing. Provide your students with these tools and guide them in assessing their own performances based on the established criteria. This structured approach helps students develop a more objective and systematic evaluation process.

6. Performance Opportunities: Organize regular performance opportunities for your students, such as recitals or studio classes. Encourage them to evaluate their own performances after each event. By experiencing the pressure and excitement of performing, students can develop a clearer understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

7. Celebrate Progress: Emphasize the importance of celebrating progress, no matter how small. Encourage your students to acknowledge their achievements and recognize the effort they have put into their violin playing. Celebrating progress helps students stay motivated and fosters a positive mindset towards self-evaluation and continuous improvement.

In conclusion, as a violin teacher, I can help my students evaluate themselves by promoting goal setting, self-reflection, recording and listening, peer feedback, using rubrics and self-assessment tools, providing performance opportunities, and celebrating progress. By fostering a culture of self-evaluation, I empower my students to take an active role in their own learning and development as violinists.

This is like a real relief for me and should help a beginner OR veteran player understand why they want to play & teach the violin for a living.  Any questions about my teaching and my responsibilities are covered in the above document.
